Look I get it, it’s almost cliché by now, “ women need a tribe”, but I really want to tell you why for me it is so important to have a tribe, a women’s community, a mom’s group, or whatever you want to call it.
I moved out of my home country, far away from my family and childhood friends when I was 23 years old. I married, had my first child 3000 miles away from home, I felt really isolated, you know, first time mom, far away from my mom, my friends, my home,I craved closeness, I craved for support, I felt lonely and scared, and then when my son wasn’t even one, we moved further away, 7000 miles away, to an island in the middle of the Pacific. There, so far away from everything that was familiar, I discovered the importance of having a tribe.
I made some friends, mom friends, women friends, friends who would understand my struggles, take my kid, and laugh and cry with me. They empowered me to become a better person and they made me feel that I belonged somewhere, that we were part of a family, that they had my back, that I wasn’t alone, and that others were going through the same things that I was. Just sharing our daily lives was so important. The support and the love got us through some rough moments and really filled our souls with joy. Jane Fonda says it better than I, “Friendship between women is different than friendship between men. We talk about different things. We delve deep. We go under, even if we haven’t seen each other for years. There are hormones that are released from women to other women that are healthy and do away with the stress hormones. It’s my women friends that keep starch in my spine and without them, I don’t know where I would be. We have to just hang together and help each other.”
So it was there, 7000 miles away from home where I found my tribe, and believe me, it changed my life…
Knowing this when we moved again, I looked for another community. This time it took me longer but I had finally found my sisters, the ones who know me in my ups and downs, my family away from home. This is why I feel so strong about creating a community with other women. I know that a woman who succeeds helps empower other women too. So let us connect, help each other rise. The sky is the limit!
